my fellow himejoshis,

without torrenting you will not be able to download anything from this site, because we only host torrents. but if you don't know how to download them, then it can be a little confusing to know where or how to start!!!

don't worry, it is very simple. you need only 1 or 2 things to start torrenting:
  • a bittorrent client
  • (optional but very recommended) a vpn which allows bittorrent traffic
a bittorrent client is basically an app on your pc which takes metadata for a torrent (held in a .torrent file or elsewhere) and basically does the work to download from the torrent. as a little side note, torrents are very different to regular downloads. with a regular download, you are transferring one file from a single server to your pc with just one connection. but a torrent makes use of lots of 'peers' - people who are also downloading or have already downloaded that file - so you are downloading from lots of people at once.

my favorite client is qBittorrent - it's simple, pretty easy to use, but also really powerful once you need more control (like automatically grouping torrents by type and saving them to different places - very cool). it's also completely free (as in speech) so that's awesome. you can download it at https://www.qbittorrent.org/download for windows, mac and linux.

there are also torrent apps for mobile - my favorite on android is one called Flud, it has ads but otherwise it's pretty simple to use and works. as for ios, unfortunately there's none on the app store - you have to either jailbreak or sideload a torrent client. (you could always use a seedbox and download from there but it usually costs money to rent a seedbox).

YOU SHOULD ALSO HAVE A VPN WHEN DOWNLOADING!!!

there are two important reasons:
  • when you torrent, your ip address is revealed to every peer connected to the torrent.
  • your isp can usually see that you are downloading torrents but they can also see exactly what you're downloading!!! after all they can just connect to whatever torrent you connected to and find out for themselves
also please make sure that you get a good vpn. some free vpns don't encrypt traffic (which defeats the point of a vpn) or sell user data or don't allow torrents.

my current vpn is mullvad vpn - 5 euro per month for a secure connection on 5 devices and 100% guaranteed privacy. there are other vpns which exist as well, they may have a good experience as well, but do your research to make sure that they allow torrents and are secure and private. go get it at https://mullvad.net/en/vpn.

AGAIN PLEASE CONSIDER GETTING A VPN - IT WILL KEEP YOU SAFE

anyway, once you have a torrent client, you need to get some torrent files or magnet links. they are both kinda the same, they just tell the client who is around to send the files to you (or more formally what 'seeds' are uploading/seeding).

Image
^ for example in qbittorrent you click this icon and you put whatever torrent file you have.

Image
^ then it will show this window, showing what you're downloading and asking where you want to save it to.

Image
^ and then finally it'll start downloading. notice that there are lots of ip addresses in that list - that's why i stressed you get a vpn above, because yours is in that list too.

give it some time to download - it might be fast or slow depending on the number of seeds. again, a seed is someone in the torrent network that is uploading. there's also a leech, which is someone that downloads without uploading. don't be a leech! sharing is caring.

if it's not downloading, chances are:
  • you've got a dead torrent with no seeds :( - make sure to check the number of seeds before downloading
  • your vpn/isp blocks bittorrent traffic - use a different vpn
anyway, that's about it. torrenting has a few more steps than usual, but well, you're getting it for free - so don't complain.
